_____________WHO WE ARE:
The mission of MODA - to share great digital art and pioneering new mediums with the public - brings together people of varying expertise to preserve, study, and push the digital art renaissance forward. It is part of our mission to design and construct exhibitions, host analysis and critique of digital artworks and NFTs, lead art-making and educational programs, and develop tools for artists and other independent museums to experience digital art at the highest quality.

MoDA has no head but rather a heart with many arms. The board and staff operate the organization's mission and share responsibility for the future of digital art. The decentralized organization has shared decision making power and a reward/voting system.
Through the leadership of the organization, MODA manifests this mission by preserving, hosting, and developing tools for platforms and artists that reflect the vitality, complexity, and unfolding patterns of the digital and contemporary art world. MODA works to forward the digital art movement by presenting exhibitions, educational programs, maintaining digital archives, supporting critical analysis of work, and building tools to allow artists and collectors to experience digital artworks at their intended quality and value.

Central to MODA’s mission is the encouragement of an ever-deeper understanding and enjoyment of contemporary digital art by the diverse international audiences that it serves.

<description>MODA ARTIST SPOTLIGHTNIOHURU XInterviewed by Mila Phelps Friedl* Could you provide a bit of background of yourself as an artist, your influences and inspirations? *
* I would love to hear about your process with creating, any projects you're excited about and what you're currently working on. *
* Any thoughts on the NFT world? Your experience in it, what it does for artists? Pros? Cons? *My name is Niohuru X. I’m a Chinese Makeup artist living in Brooklyn, New York. I came to The US two years ago for college and started doing makeup one and half years ago. My makeup/visual art are very inspired by my culture background being Chinese Manchu, wildlife/nature in my hometown [and] also my journey of discovering my own identity being queer.
My signature style is creating physical “real” 3D makeup that looks like digital art. I love tricking people’s eyes &#38;amp; brain and blurring the line between physical and digital art. My works are all very personal and contain a lot of raw emotions. I believe that people looking at my works can feel the vibration and energy that I transformed through my brushes. I want people to feel scared and uncomfortable when they look at my makeup (most of my looks are empowered by my trauma and pain.) “
Painful but beautiful, I always try to channel my dark past into beauty and brightness.”
One of the projects that I have been working on is about my identity as a young Queer Asian immigrant “ fresh off the boat.” Coming from another country I knew nothing about what it meant and felt like being Asian &#38;amp; queer in the states. I plan to put my understanding towards Asian stereotypes into this visual series. Stereotypes can be toxic and ugly but they can also be a source of great, great power. I plan to channel all the negative energy into something empowering and beautiful.

&#38;nbsp; At the moment, &#38;nbsp;women POC and queer people only [make up] a very, very small part of the NFT world. In 2022 I would love to see more diversity... With more diversity , new artists can bring new aesthetics, new vibration[s].. Really looking forward to seeing “ trendy “ “popular” projects that actually are “good art.”&#38;nbsp;

kiss kiss,

Niohuru X

NICK DENBOER&#38;nbsp;by Mila Phelps Friedl
From photo collage to small home construction, Nick DenBoer has charted many uncertain waters before diving into the space of digital kitbash-experimental collage animation in the pursuit of his now widely recognized style. Known online as Smearballs, self proclaimed “Professional smearballer,” DenBoer graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, where he is still based as an artist today. Says DenBoer, “I kind of gave up on the art world for a long time, because I did a lot of gallery shows when I was younger, and it was just a bit of a dead end… you know, you're trying to sell your work to your friends and family, whoever you can get out to an art show, and it's not, you know, as widely accessible as the digital art world where all of a sudden, the entire world can see your artwork and potentially buy it. [NFTs] really cracked open a market that was pretty closed off in the traditional art world sense.”

DenBoer’s kitbash-video collage style inspirations date back to library and bookshop visits where he’d salvage old magazines, creating “weird, distorted versions of ads and caricature collage.” It wasn’t until 2009 after 10 years in construction that DenBoer began to experiment with the video animation side of Youtube - “that kind of started a whole new career for me and now it's come full circle, rather into [the] NFT world and back into the fine art kind of side of things.”

These days, DenBoer’s abstract remix animations have found their way into collaborations, both creative and commercial, with DeadMau5, KFC, Conan O’Brien, Red Bull and Adult Swim - to name a few. DenBoer’s process depends on the kind of animation, if there is layering over video footage or if it is an original 3D character. Using programs like Cinema 4D, Octane, Houdini and ZBrush, DenBoer is able to create intricate scenes with hyperactive characters in varying degrees of bizarre positionings. Background music is added in Cubase while additional character work is completed in iClone or Character Creator 3 and Rokoko’s Motion Capture Suit software.

“I've amassed a giant collection of 3D assets and characters that I've made… clothing and themes and props that I can draw from, so it's somewhat of a kitbashing approach, taking existing assets and assets that I bought and assets that I made and mixing them all together. I still approach it as a bit of a remix artist, taking existing things and messing with them but it's getting more and more into just building more things from scratch and building up full detailed scenes…I just kind of try to have fun with it and make weird, surreal abominations.”

For DenBoer, 2022 is the year of personal projects - he is currently working on a sequel to “Another Day at the Office,” featured below, that will instead feature a house party scene with between 12 - 20 characters and quite a few details within the animation itself.

In his successes as a digital artist, DenBoer hopes that these early days of the NFT explosion even out to provide stability and appreciation for the talented digital artists who can make their art and a living in the digital fine art field. “[We’re] in the early days of this digital art NFT world, so it's kind of exploded in this weird bubble form and taking on kind of strange paths, but I think it's here to stay. I'm excited to keep grinding away… I think if artists just keep making great work and putting the time in, I think over time, it'll hold some value…I think a lot of the noise will get washed away as time progresses…. even in the early 2000s, digital artwork wasn't really accepted in the fine art world. Now. 20 years later, it's finally accepted. So we're still in the infancy, but I think it's gonna level out to be a more regular market at some point.”

		<description>MODA ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
WILL WHARTONby Mila Phelps Friedl

[Born in St. Paul Minnesota, Will Wharton is a new media artist living in Los Angeles. Wharton received his B.A. in Design/Media Arts at UCLA and he has exhibited his pieces at The UCLA Broad Art Center, The New Wright Gallery, Pauley Pavilion and various warehouses throughout Los Angeles]

In MoDA’s November showcase, “Unsolicited Airdrop,” Wharton was one of three artists who sold work to collectors. His piece Fossilized Film Reel No. 3, which sold for .8 Ethereum, ($3,174.20) was part of a series exploring the relationship between the natural world - a digital world of surreal digital ecosystems - with collector culture.

Inspired by the tradition of “Wunderkammer,” these cabinets of curiosity date back to the 1500s where collectors would display artifacts with roots in religion, history and the natural world. Wharton expressed how interesting it was that these collections blurred the lines between science and art often, representing a collector’s “worldly prestige.” An early precursor to modern museums, the tradition of “Wunderkammer,” most certainly has problematic roots in imperialism but Wharton’s work aims to explore “what types of artifacts, old film reels and organisms might be stored in [a] metaverse cabinet of curiosities. These digital organisms attempt to emulate how special conditions, like the creation of the blockchain/metaverse, can give rise to many rich, new and strange customs, communities, cycles and emergent cultures.”

For Fossilized Film Reel No. 3, a mesmerizing animation with pulsing, hieroglyphic-like creatures that meander across the screen, Wharton’s process involved form over function - creating the forms first, and then having the creatures dictate their own function. “I really liked the idea [of] showing the beautiful life of these organisms… this natural life cycle and then… there's like a point in the video where it seems like it changes… [and] the creature itself ends up being used for this like really mundane, sort of office task… I think there's a lot of humor… in the way we use resources or the way we exploit the natural world.”

With the use of VR controllers and a headset, Wharton sculpts, paints and creates his digital art in a 3D, simulated environment. “There's something to me just on a deeper, like, philosophical level that I really appreciate about this type of tool for 3D … it allows you … to bring in the nuance and the imperfection of the human kind of brush stroke or like…drawn lines. So it creates these, like much more organic and natural forms that are really hard to get and achieve if you were to just use traditional modeling techniques.”

Wharton was one of MoDA’s artists at this year’s Art Basel as part of The Temporal Gallery and The Wall at Factory Town. Two of his pieces from the featured series are still available for purchase and some of his more recent work will take a galactic journey as part of the Arch Mission Foundation, “a non-profit organization whose goal is to create multiple redundant repositories of human knowledge around the Solar System, including on Earth.” Several of his pieces will be nano-lithographed onto a disk and sent to the moon as part of an upcoming space mission. Earthside, Wharton is working with Yi, an “NFT Protocol for Digital private goods” that ensures only the buyer of a specific digital piece can view it - sharing it on viewable platforms, only if they choose. Yi’s mission emulates the exclusivity of fine art auctions where a buyer may choose to exhibit a particular art piece, in the sanctity of their private home.

In this new age of digital art, spaces and culture - artists like Wharton help to expand the audience’s understanding of the realms of creativity, the variations of artistic technique and what it truly means to own, collect and trade in digital NFTs. MoDA is excited to share these updates and to highlight Good_Boy_William as one of our artists.

<description>MODA ARTIST SPOTLIGHT CHRISTOPHER RUTLEDGEby Mila Phelps FriedlThese days, it is relatively normal to see wild characters, born of digital creatives, making their rounds on the internet, in the realm of NFT collections and featured in art shows. For Los Angeles based digital artist Christopher Rutledge, also known online as Tokymegz, these characters are the fabric of his art, stemming from his love of flash animation cemented all the way back in his 5th grade computer class.

Around 2015, Rutledge made the jump to 3D animation styles noting that this was “a pivotal moment, because [3D art styles] really kind of clicked together the creative and technical sides of my brain…. 3D just opened up this whole new toolset…like I could start automating things and I could build things in a more procedural way.” Pursuing a degree first at Rhode Island School of Design with an eventual transfer to Pratt Institute, Rutledge emerged with an BFA in Digital Arts and 3D Animation. “I would say overall, like, the style that I've found that appeals to me the most, and that I'm most interested in exploring is stylized characters, and worlds… with realistic rendering, and animation and simulation and things like that so that [it] is kind of cartoony looking in terms of the design, but realistic in terms of the material and it feels tactile, and it feels like it could be a real thing.”

Using the procedural software Houdini, Rutledge has found a tool that combines his passion for character work into a highly technical, malleable simulation - creating a wide portfolio of wildly gesticulating characters with emotion-filled faces and a cartoonish immunity to the binding laws of gravity. Before consolidating his process to Houdini specifically, Rutledge recounts a roundabout workflow that involved VR sculpting in Adobe Medium before bringing the art piece into ZBrush for fine tuning clean-up, a swap over to Substance Painter for texturization, Marvelous Designer for the addition of clothes and finally to Maya for the last bits of animation before going back to Houdini to add the stimulating effects to the face, hair and body of the character. Now Rutledge finds it best to utilize each of these tools as needed but to build primarily around the functions of Houdini.

Currently, Rutledge has a few collaborations with Takeshi Murata, an American contemporary artist who also works in the digital space. One such collaboration, Larry the Dog, featured on Rutledge’s social platforms, has been a great exercise in how animation can interact with an already made character - Larry the dog ballooning, stretching and collapsing like some gelatinous children’s toy while in a stylish basketball jersey. Rutledge has enjoyed the joint project with Murata handling the sculpt and the clothing of Larry, and Rutledge free to play with character animation, which can include everything from a floppy soft body sim to the addition of strange liquids interacting with the original Larry the dog simulation. Says Rutledge, “I’m just trying to figure out how to use Houdini in a way that it doesn't usually get used because I think most people think of Houdini and they think of people making Godzilla destroying a building for like a movie that ILM is doing the the effects on or like you know giant explosions for Michael Bay… but this tool is just so insanely powerful and it can do so much other stuff that why would I want to do kind of what everyone else is doing with it.” In another collaboration with Murata, along with J. Krispy, Rutledge helped in the creation of Kai Gen, a procedural character generator. It was a project that tested their creativity around the limits of on-chain file sizing - the final code for these varied Kai Gen creatures clocking at at somewhere under 45 kilobytes. “We're just having fun watching that project grow and kind of coming up with ideas for other stuff we could potentially do with it… [we] want to kind of explore that more and [we] are creatively excited about the different possibilities.”

* * *“I just love doing characters and faces and stuff. Because it's so easy to spark emotion coming off of the face. And like making really tiny little tweaks to that face can create such a different sort of emotion. Our brains are just so tuned in to seeing faces and stuff, that it makes it really fun to work that way in 3D with procedural character building. To me, it's like a whole other level of emotion that you feel when you look at a piece of art that has like a character's face in it…it's like, looking back at you and you can kind of get a sense of what they're feeling or projecting your own emotions onto them or whatever. I love my characters and I am just trying to think of clever, unique, new ways to make characters that I haven't thought of or seen before. And it's really cool and inspiring to see what everyone else is doing with characters, both in 3D and beyond.”
